The Benefits of Participating in Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation After a Cardiac Event

Cardiac rehabilitation , more casually known as cardiac rehab, is a program customized to improve the health of cardiac patients through exercise and education.  The program is personalized for each patient, whether he or she suffered from a heart attack or underwent surgery as a treatment for their heart disease.  Cardiac rehab is typically divided into various phases, the most advanced of which occur on an outpatient basis and involve nutritional counseling, exercise, and emotional support.  Participating in one of these outpatient programs provides a wide variety of benefits, some of which are described below.

  • Increased survivability:  The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology both recommend cardiac rehabilitation programs as an excellent way to increase a patient’s chances of survival after a cardiac event. The cardiovascular exercise, in combination with improved nutrition and other lifestyle changes, help to improve the strength of cardiac patients, prevent their condition from worsening, and reduce the risk of future cardiovascular issues.
  • Emotional support:  The cardiac rehab team will typically include doctors, nurses, exercise specialists, dietitians, and other medical professionals that provide emotional support and help each patient reach their goals.  Other patients who are also participating in the program will often provide much needed emotional support for patients as they face the challenges of cardiovascular disease.
  • Improved quality of life:  The increased confidence and strength that comes as result of participating in a cardiac rehabilitation program will not only increase a patient’s survivability, but will also increase their overall quality of life.  Patients that have better cardiovascular health will be able to perform the activities of daily life with more ease and comfort and will generally lead a longer, healthier life.
