NeuroScience Gamma Knife Center at Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center
The Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center’s NeuroScience Gamma Knife Center is celebrating its 5th year anniversary of providing the latest technology for non-invasive surgery treatments. In fact, NeuroScience Gamma Knife technology is the first of its kind to be available between San Francisco and West Los Angeles County— and ultimately allows physicians to deliver crucial radiation beams to areas of the brain that would otherwise be inoperable.
Gamma Knife technology can be used to treat functional disorders of the brain without making a single cut, providing unmatched precision without the risks usually associated with surgery. Unlike traditional surgical procedures, most patients can undergo Gamma Knife procedures and go home the same day. Because there are no incisions, there is virtually no patient discomfort or side effects. The Neuroscience Gamma Knife Center provides treatment for a number of conditions, including:
- Brain lesions
- Benign and malignant brain tumors
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Essential Tremor
- Vascular malformations
- Movement disorders
- Parkinson’s disease
Gamma Knife procedures at the Los Robles Neuroscience Gamma Knife Center are completed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including neurosurgeons, physicists, neuroradiologists, radiation oncologists, technicians, specialized nurses, and clinical personnel members.
Prior to the procedure, a titanium imaging frame is attached to the patient’s skull using a series of small pins. Once the frame has been attached, an image of the brain is created using a CT scan or MRI to create computerized reference points and develop an appropriate treatment plan. The patient then rests on a sliding platform bed and enters a sphere containing 201 sources of cobalt 60, or a synthetic radioactive isotope material, which is focused directly onto the area of the brain requiring treatment. The Gamma Knife then delivers specific doses of radiation to the treatment site while being monitored by the multidisciplinary team from an adjacent room.
